The Holy Face Novena begins on Sunday, February 8th, so as to end on Monday, February 16th. The Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus is Tuesday, February 17th, 2026 (it is always the day before Ash Wednesday.)

O Lord Jesus Christ, in presenting ourselves before Your adorable Face, to ask of You the graces of which we stand most in need, we beseech You, above all, to give us that interior disposition of never refusing at any time to do what You require of us by Your Holy Commandments and Your Divine inspirations.

O Good Jesus, Who has said: “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” give us, O Lord, that faith which obtains all, or supply in us what may be deficient. Grant us, by the pure effect of Thy Charity and for Thy eternal glory, the graces we need and which we look for from Thine infinite mercy. Amen.

Be merciful to us, O God, and reject not our prayers when, amid our afflictions, we call upon Your Holy Name and seek with love and confidence Your Adorable Face.

We thank You, O Lord, for all Thy benefits, and we entreat You to engrave in our hearts feeling of love and gratitude, putting upon our lips songs of thanksgiving to Your eternal praise. Amen.

Many Catholics are unaware of the fact that this millennium was dedicated to the Face of Christ by Pope St. John Paul II. He lifted high before the Church the banner of the Holy Face of Jesus at the dawn of the millennium. The Face of Christ was to be the standard for the faithful to follow in this spiritual battle that exists in the world between light and darkness.

I have written before on the Holy Face Devotion. In The Holy Face Devotion: what we need for our times I said:

This Devotion is intended to make reparation for the sins of blasphemy against the Holy Name of God and the profanation of Sundays and Holy Days. In addition, it is to be a spiritual weapon against Communists.

I think it can, and should, be used as a spiritual weapon against right-wing extremism and not just Communism. Communism and Fascism are two sides of the same coin; both glorifybthe power of the State at the expense of God, and Fascism adds the glorification and near idol-worship of the leader it centers around.

Homemade Holy Face Chaplet

This is apparently the season for me to repurpose chaplets and rosaries. A while back I posted about The Six Decade Rosary of Lourdes and St. Bridget, followed by: My Homemade St. Rita Chaplet and How to say the Chaplets of St. Rita of Cascia.

Well, today I bring you my Homemade Holy Face Chaplet:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was “repurposed” from one of those “Little Flower Rosaries” that get sent out in mailings or found in churches all over. I think the Little Flower Society makes them (not sure, but they’re the likely source.) I retained the centerpiece medal which I think is appropriate given her name in religious life was “St.Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face.” The rosary had a few missing beads and I took a look, did some figuring, and grabbed my pliers and went to work. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The crucifix was a spare part from another rosary; it matchef the Holy Face medal I already had. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The chaplet of the Holy Face is comprised of 33 beads divided into five groups of six beads, headed by another bead, with three extra ones at the end. At the head of the Chaplet are an image of the Holy Face of Jesus and a Cross. The chaplet of the Holy Face has the purpose of honoring of the five senses of Our Lord Jesus Christ, all of which were abused during His Passion. The 33 beads represent the 33 years He spent on Earth.

On the cross you recite the prayer: “God, come to my assistance; Lord, Make haste to help me,” and then the “Glory be…”

Then on the each first large beads announce the sense of our Lord (for the first section, “Touch”) and say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be.” Then on each of the six smaller beads say, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.”

Then repeat this for each of the next four sections, each one representing the senses of hearing, sight, smell and finally taste.

After “Taste,” say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be” on the next large bead. After follows three small beads on which you recite on each bead, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.”

Then on the image of His Face dangling from near the cross you say, “O God, Our Protector, please look upon us and cast your gaze upon the Face of Thy Christ.”

Using the Holy Face Chaplet as a “sobriety’ or “recovery” chaplet

In The Holy Face of Jesus Chaplet for Alcoholics and Addicts, I mentioned:

Now, I am working of a new book of prayers for Sober Catholics, and I am including material on the Holy Face Devotion. While attending to that chapter, I got the idea that we can say the chaplet ourselves with the intention of making reparation for the abuses of our senses during the time of our addictions. Each one was abused by us during our addictions; for with each we committed sins against ourselves and others. 

Take some time to reflect on they ways by which you sinfully used touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste during your active addiction. 

Instead of waiting for that book to come out (no release date planned yet, because it’s nowhere near being finished) I thought I’d write a few things that expand upon the above quote. This post could serve as a rough draft for that portion of the Holy Face Devotion chapter.

OK, like  I said in that above quoted post:

The chaplet of the Holy Face is comprised of 33 beads divided into five groups of six beads, headed by another bead, with three extra ones at the end. At the head of the Chaplet are an image of the Holy Face of Jesus and a Cross. The chaplet of the Holy Face has the purpose of honoring of the five senses of Our Lord Jesus Christ, all of which were abused during His Passion. The 33 beads represent the 33 years He spent on Earth.

When you say the chaplet, (available from EWTN here and here or at other Catholic shops selling rosaries and chaplets) just try and contemplate the sins you’ve committed with those senses. 

This aligns quite nicely with the reparative work of the chaplet. Each set of beads corresponds with that sense of Our Lord that was abused by the Romans during Passion: from the night of Holy Thursday when He was arrested and lead away to be tortured, all the way through to His Crucifixion. The Holy Face Devotion, like the Sacred Heart Devotion, is a work or reparation. We pray it to make reparation for the sins of others. When we use this to recall our sins committed by our senses during our addiction, we make reparation for them. 

The first sense prayed about is touch. Possible sins of touch are any of self-inflicted impurity (masturbation.) Also, the hands in picking up the drink, or in using drugs. 

The second sense is that of hearing. Possible sins could be in hearing the call of the drink, or the drug. Listening to sinful music. Listenng to gossip. There could be more. Dwell on that.

Next sense is sight. Pornography is an obvious one. Also, watching sinful movies and TV. Another could be letting your eyes distract you from whatever purpose you have in front of you.

Next is smell. Ever snorteed drugs or any bother substance? (Offhand, those are all I can think of regarding this sense.)

Next is taste. Drinking and drugging are the obvious ones. Also, gluttony. 

So, every time you recite the “Holy Face Chaplet (of Sobriety/of Recovery)” meditate on the senses and how you abused them. If you are a Twelve-Stepper, this could be useful in your Step Four work. This could also be an Examination of Conscience, either your daily one, or the one done just before Confession.

In this post: “Books on the Holy Face Devotion. And a chaplet,” I introduced to you the Holy Face Chaplet.

I’ve become a little addicted to reciting it, it is quite comforting. On the cross you recite the prayer: “God, come to my assistance; Lord, Make haste to help me,” and then the “Glory be…” Then on the each first large beads announce the sense of our Lord (for the first section, “Touch”) and say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be.” Then on each of the six smaller beads say, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.” Then repeat this for each of the next four sections, each one representing the senses of hearing, sight, smell and finally taste. After “Taste,” say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be” on the next large bead. After follows three small beads which you would probably be curious about what to do about them, if you had the chaplet already. You recite on each bead, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.” Then on the image of His Face dangling from near the cross you say, “O God, Our Protector, please look upon us and cast your gaze upon the Face of Thy Christ.” And that’s it! It doesn’t take long to say.

I say it every morning, right after my Chaplet of St. Maximilian Kolbe.

Now, I am working of a new book of prayers for Sober Catholics, and I am including material on the Holy Face Devotion. A Prayer to the Holy Face from EWTN

I ran across this prayer to the Holy Face of Jesus from EWTN on my Facebook feed a few minutes ago. I had been planning on writing a post on the Holy Face Chaplet as it can be used by alcoholics, so I took this as a reminder to get around to it (which will be the next post in a little while after this.)

If you read the prayer, it invokes the Sorrowful Mother (“piercing sorrow of Our Lady as she beheld You in Your cruel Passion”) and that line served as yet ANOTHER reminder to ME to remind YOU that today kicks off the month of September, which is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Her Feast Day is September 15, which is a Sunday this year which means there will be no Mass honoring Our Lady under that title this year. 

Nevertheless, I will post a few things about the Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows over the next two weeks.

The Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus

Today is Fat Tuesday, or Carnival. It is the day prior to Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent.) It is also the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus. There is a Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. I discovered it a few years ago at a talk given after a Latin Mass I used to attend. I was taken by the devotion, and introduced it to you in this post. I expanded upon it here. If you read those articles (please do so soon!) you’ll understand why I referred to it in one of them as the ‘devotion for our times.’ It seems tailor-made to specifically counter the madness of the contemporary political and culture milieu. And, if you want to know more about it, I recommended a few books here.

The Feast Day for the Holy Face of Jesus is not celebrated in the Ordinary Form of the Mass, and in the Extraordinary Form (‘Latin Mass’) is is an optional votive Mass. But in years past the day before Ash Wednesday is dedicated to the ‘work of reparation,’ which is interesting given that the same day in secular cultures is dedicated to getting the last bit of debauchery out of your system before Lent begins the next day.

Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus

Last year I began a new devotion, the “Work of Reparation,” also known as the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. I initially wrote about it here, but to quote from that post for a refresher: “During the late 1840’s. Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to a Carmelite nun in Tours, France, and revealed a message to her that was to be shared with the world. That message was the Devotion to His Most Holy Face. Sister Marie of St. Peter was tasked with making this “Work of Reparation” known.

This Devotion is intended to make reparation for the sins of blasphemy against the Holy Name of God and the profanation of Sundays and Holy Days. In addition, it is to be a spiritual weapon against Communists.”

I went on to say, “This is a devotion gravely needed for our times. Western Civilization is conceivably in a state of collapse as evidenced by the political and popular responses to the Coronavirus pandemic, riots and mob thuggery in our cities and Leftist infection of our cultural elites and the resulting aggressive action by the power centers they control in culture and society.” I am afraid that in addition to the threat of Leftist violence in the USA, Right-wing violence over the Presidential election results is now also a possibility. We may not have ‘passed the point of no return,’ regarding correcting our collective path to perdition, but to me, it’s only a matter of time before there is a Divine intervention of some kind. God does not provide miracles when there are still ordinary means to resolve problems and crises, but I think we’re coming to some such thing  soon. When? No idea, but the time for spiritual preparation is NOW (actually, it has been for a while.)

And so we come to the Holy Face Devotion, which in recent months  I am seeing more evidence of online (namely in the form of You Tube channels dedicated in part to it.)

Today is traditionally the Feast Day for the Holy Face. It is not celebrated in the Ordinary Form of the Mass, and in the Extraordinary Form (‘Latin Mass’) is is an optional votive Mass. But in years past the day before Ash Wednesday id dedicated to the ‘work of reparation,’ which is interesting given that the same day in secular cultures is dedicated to getting the last bit of debauchery out of your system before Lent begins the next day.

“Fr. Z,” who has a You Tube Channel where he celebrates the Latin Mass, posted yesterday on his blog, the Mass Propers for the Votive Mass in Honor of the Holy Face of Jesus. I introduced to you the Holy Face Devotion in these two posts: The Holy Face Devotion: what we need for our times and The Holy Face, Disfigured by Sin

In short, the Devotion to the Holy Face is a work of reparation to atone for blasphemy against the Lord’s name and the profanation of Sundays and Holy Days. In addition, it was also intended as a spiritual weapon to be used in the war against Communism.

There is a trilogy of books that are regarded as holding the basics of the Devotion. These are offered by TAN books (well, sort of. I’ll discuss that in a few sentences). The books are “The Golden Arrow,” the first half of which contains the autobiography of the Carmelite Nun in Tours, France who received the revelations from Jesus in 1846-1848, Sr. Marie of St. Peter. It also contains all of the messages of Jesus in the second half. The next two are written by Dorothy Scallan. First is “The “Holy Man of Tours: The Life of Leo Dupont (1797-1876), Apostle of the Holy Face Devotion,” and lastly is “The Whole World Will Love Me: The Life of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face (1873-1897).”

As I said, all are available through tanbooks.com, (just click on the titles, they’re links to their TAN page). Except for the biography of Leo Dupont, which is not in print. That is only available as an ebook. I emailed TAN asking if they have plans to return it to print, but they do not; although they customer service representative kindly told me she’ll pass my request up to her superiors. And here is where you readers can come in handy: If you would please go to tanbooks.com and access the contact information (at the bottom of the page, it’s basically CustomerService at TANBooks dot com but it’s easier if you click on that email link on their site.) and nicely, politely, respectfully request that “The “Holy Man of Tours: The Life of Leo Dupont (1797-1876), Apostle of the Holy Face Devotion,” by Dorothy Scallan (Sku: 1124) be brought back into print? Yes, it’s available by ebook, but paper is better! 😉 Thank you! Perhaps if there’s a sudden rise in interest they’ll reconsider and re-issue it. Maybe you can be persuasive; explain how the Devotion is sorely needed in these times… TAN seems to be increasing the number of titles on current events and a Catholic response to them.

If, however, TAN does not want to re-issue it, there is another biography of Leo Dupont that is in the public domain and available FOR FREE LEGAL DOWNLOAD online through the Internet Archive. You can get The holy man of Tours : or, the life of Léon Papin-Dupont, “who died at Tours in the odor of sanctity, March 18, 1876” written by M. L’Abbe Pierre Desire Janvier. It’s 517 pages and available in a wide variety of formats.

Another thing to consider is the Holy Face Chaplet. The “…chaplet of the Holy Face is comprised of 33 round cross beads and 6 oval beads on a brown cord with a wood cross and picture medal of Jesus’ Holy Face. The little chaplet of the Holy Face has for its object the honoring of the five senses of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It is well to recite it every day in order to obtain the triumph of our holy mother the Catholic Church and the downfall of her enemies! The Chaplet is also available from other sources and made from different materials, but EWTN is where I bought mine.

I’ve become a little addicted to reciting it, it is quite comforting. On the cross you recite the prayer: “God, come to my assistance; Lord, Make haste to help me,” and then the “Glory be…” Then on the each first large bead announce the sense of our Lord (for the first section, “Touch”) and say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be.” Then on each of the six smaller beads say, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.” Then repeat this for each of the next four sections, each one representing the senses of hearing, sight, smell and finally taste. After “Taste,” say “My Jesus, Mercy,” followed by the “Glory Be” on the next large bead. After follows three small beads which you would probably be curious about what to do about them, if you had the chaplet already. You recite on each bead, “Arise, O God, let thy enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before Thy Face.” Then on the medal dangling from near the cross you say, “O God, Our Protector,  please look upon us and cast your gaze upon the Face of Thy Christ.” And that’s it! It doesn’t take long to say.
